MAJORITARIANISM HAS NO ROOM IN DEMOCRACY

The ruling party is using their numbers in parliament wrongly by pushing through anything even when they know they are on the wrong end of the law.

It is the same ANC that walked out of the CODESA talks when they could not get their way. It is on record that the country was saved by the current Deputy President, Cyril Ramaphosa and then National Party Minister Roelf Meyer.

Somebody in the ANC must stand up to salvage the integrity of the country and not let the country go down to save an individual.

It is not right for the ANC Members of Parliament serving in the Ad Hoc Committee to say the President should not pay for improvements on his homestead.

The National Key Points Act states clearly that the Minister  responsible for the act, in this case the Minister of Police, should right from the beginning after establishing how much it will cost to secure the said premises inform the owner of the premises or property how much they are due to pay.

The President is also wrong to place the Minister on the spot by asking him to determine if he, the President, has to pay. It is not whether he has to pay it is how much he has to pay.

Minister Nhleko is also reported as having said he will await the outcome of the findings of the Ad Hoc committee. The fault of course lies with his predecessor, Mthethwa, who did not do his work to inform President Zuma how much he has to pay when his was home declared a National Key Point.

Resources continue to be wasted on people talking to themselves about themselves and not prepared to put the interest of the country first.

It is surprising that at no stage do role players and commentators refer to the stipulations of the National Key Points Act which is quite clear that should the owner whose property is declared a key point refuse or fail to pay, such owner shall be guilty of an offence and be liable to a fine not exceeding R200 000, 00 or imprisonment not exceeding five years or both such fine and imprisonment.

The constitution of this country should not be sacrificed on the altar of expediency by allowing an individual to flout laws.
